Supporting Our Next Generation of World Citizens Through Multilingual Education

By Myrna Castrejón, President & CEO, California Charter Schools Association

Whenever I see a sign or hear a commercial stating: “Hablamos Español,” I am reminded that world language skills are vital as our communities become more diverse.

I have long championed these programs, seeing the benefits through my journey as an immigrant to the United States and a native Spanish speaker. Understanding the value of biliteracy has made me a more vigorous supporter of the educational opportunities provided by many of the charter public schools my organization represents.

Recently, US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, a vocal advocate for multilingual education, launched the “Being Bilingual is a Superpower” initiative. The program highlights the transformative impact of multilingualism on students’ academic and socioemotional development. It underscores the need for comprehensive support systems to ensure that all students, regardless of their linguistic backgrounds, have access to high-quality multilingual education.

California, the nation’s most diverse state with citizens and cultures from around the globe, stands at the forefront of this advocacy, particularly in its charter public schools.

California’s charter public schools embraced the tenets of Secretary Cardona’s initiative decades ago, offering dual-language immersion programs when traditional schools were not allowed to under the law. They recognize the immense value in preparing students for success in an increasingly globalized world and honoring the diversity of their communities.

One such example is the Multicultural Learning Center (MLC), a charter public school in Canoga Park, which offers a bilingual education program that supports students in developing a worldview. Through an innovative curriculum that integrates language learning with instruction, MLC ensures that students develop proficiency in both languages while gaining a deep understanding of various academic subjects. The school’s commitment to bilingualism empowers students to become culturally competent global citizens equipped to thrive in diverse environments.

In addition to academic benefits, these education models foster greater inclusivity and understanding among students from different cultural backgrounds. By learning multiple languages, students gain insight into other cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking — fostering empathy and respect for diversity and a deeper understanding of their cultural roots as their language skills scaffold toward full biliteracy. This intercultural competency is essential in promoting social cohesion and creating inclusive communities within schools.

As advocates of multilingualism, we reaffirm our commitment to linguistic diversity and inclusive education. Through collaboration, innovation, and advocacy, we can create learning environments where every student can thrive, regardless of their linguistic background. California’s charter public schools serve as beacons of excellence in this endeavor, demonstrating the transformative power in preparing students for success in college, career, and beyond.
